Critics' Awards for Theatre in Scotland shortlist

Congratulations to all those on the shortlist for this year's Critics' Awards for Theatre in Scotland (CATS) which was announced earlier this week.

Sadly it seems we missed out on seeing some of the best theatre in Scotland last year as we don't appear to have seen many of the shows nominated. But then again, we weren't wholly enthusiastic about some of the shows on the shortlist that we did manage to see.

The winners will be announced at a ceremony at Edinburgh Festival Theatre on Sunday 13th June. Tickets to the event are now on sale.

What would have made your list? I thought it was a weird selection this year. Like you I saw a few of the nominated shows and wouldn't really have put any of them on a 'best of' list.

I was most disappointed that Oran Mor's What The Animals Say by David Ireland didn't receive a nomination for best new play. I haven't seen a better play all year. Best new writer in Scotland.

Hi Chris, good to hear we weren't alone in our reaction to the shortlist. Of course without having seen some of the shows that gained several nominations it's hard to make a fair assessment.

As for what would have made our list - well, we did our review of the year for 2009 which covers much of what we expected to see recognised by the CATS (remembering that the CATS year runs May to April so some of those would have been in last year's CATS)

I would agree entirely about "What the Animals Say" and "The Glimmering Nymph" was another great Oran Mor show that missed out. Borderline's "The Ducky" was a surprising omission and from 2010, I'm disappointed "The Miracle Man" didn't get a mention.

And of course we're dismayed (but not surprised) that "The Beggar's Opera" didn't get more recognition than its well deserved nod for design.
